What does the app do?
When connected to a Polar H10 heart rate sensor, the Heart Brain Connect app measures your heart rate while you perform a breathing exercise called Resonant Breathing. It maximizes the alignment between your nervous system and your heart rate.
To help you achieve a steady and optimal breathing rhythm the app plays an animation; you breathe in (inhale) as the circles grow larger and breathe out (exhale) as the circles become smaller. The animation is programmed to help you achieve six breath cycles per minute, which is the scientifically proven optimal breath cycle to optimize your HRV.
About the Heart-Brain Connection
Researchers at the Brainclinics Research Institute have published extensively on the connection between the brain and the heart.
We recommend the following ebook, available for free at the Apple Book Store.
Listen to your Heart
Setting up Heart Brain Connect
Apple iPhone and Polar H10 Heart Rate Sensor
Before using the app, you need to pair your Polar H10 with your iPhone. Please see the quickstart guide to see how: Polar H10 Getting Started Guide
Troubleshooting this step:
If you encounter unexpected results, see your Polar H10 manual or visit this page: H10 Heart Rate Sensor to see what you can do.
Using The Heart Brain Connect app
First time opening the app
The Heart Brain Connect App will show a pop-up asking for permission to use Bluetooth the first time you open it. Please click “OK”, or the app will not function properly.
Troubleshooting this step:
Remove and reinstall the app if you clicked “Don’t allow” instead of “OK”.
For the next steps, it is necessary to wear your Polar H10 Heart Rate Sensor
Pairing your Polar H10 to the app
Before you can use the Heart Brain Connect App you need to pair it with your Polar H10 Heart Rate Sensor device.
From the START page:
1. Press SET UP
2. Press Search Button
3. Touch select your Heart Rate Sensor Device
4. Return to START screen
Troubleshooting this step:
When no device appears after pressing the Search button
Retry the Search Button
Still no device in the list?
1. Is the Bluetooth toggle switched on in your phone’s settings?
2. Are you wearing the Polar H10 Heart Rate sensor correctly?
3. Is your Heart Rate Sensor Device equipped with a working battery?
The play suite is freely available to anyone.
To train and optimize your HRV:
From the START screen: press the PLAY button to open the SET TIMER screen.
1. Set the timer to select the desired duration of the exercise.
Note: In case you find it difficult to do the exercise in the beginning we suggest you start by setting the timer to two minutes the first time you use the Heart Brain Connect app, and to add 30 seconds each time you repeat the exercise, until you can comfortably perform for at least 5 minutes.
2. Press save in the upper right corner of the screen.
3. The PLAY screen comes into view. You’ll notice a thin red line near the top of the screen. That line shows your Heart Rate.
The large circle in the center of the screen will show the breathing animation.
Below that circle you’ll see a “play” button.
4. Press the “play” button.
A countdown will start. After the countdown the actual exercise begins.
Assume a relaxed position and try to follow the rhythm of the animation as best as you can. The best effect is achieved when you exercise between 5 to 20 minutes.
The exercise will run for the duration you set in the SET TIMER screen earlier. A progress circle around the breathing animation indicates how far you are. You can press the “pause” button to restart the exercise. After you’ve completed your HRV training session you can press the RESULTS button at the bottom of the screen to view your result.
App is not measuring:
Are you wearing your Heart Rate Sensor Device in the correct way?
Instead of the ECG graph, the text “No chart data available” is displayed.
This problem sometimes occurs when the Polar is not paired correctly. A two step solution:
First: reset your Polar device:
Remove the battery from your Polar and press the metal snaps that attach to the strap with your thumbs or fingers for 30 seconds. Wait another sixty seconds before re-inserting the battery.
Second: Pair the Polar device using the Polar Beat app. After pairing you’ll see the settings screen where the toggles for “Visibility”, “Gymlink” and “ANT+” should be switched to the “on” position. You can then exit the Polar Beat app and open Heart Brain Connect, and through setup reconnect to the Polar device. If you run the Assess suite, the ECG graph line should be visible.

Viewing your results
From the START screen: press the STATS button
1. Select the exercise you want to view.
2. Press the dot on the RESULTS screen to view your HRV.
When you’re done press “STATS” (upper left corner) to select another exercise to view from the list, or press “Done” (upper right corner to return to the START screen.
Deleting results from your STATS list
As you use your Heart Brain Connect more and more your STATS list will grow, and after a while you may feel the need to delete older results. Or your exercise was interrupted, producing an incorrect or unwanted result.
Delete a result:
- Select it in the STATS list
- swipe to the left.
- Click “Delete”
Note: this cannot be undone.
The assessment suite is only accessible through a paid subscription.
Note: This is a test and exercise suite that is meant to be used in research laboratories. Even though you can subscribe to access this suite and perform the exercises, if you are not a researcher, its use to you is limited. We recommend training your HRV using the PLAY button from the start screen, as described elsewhere on this page.
If you’re using the subscription version of Heart-Brain Connect we strongly advise you to read the manual and download it to your phone.

Note that under some legislations we may be allowed to process information until you object to such processing by opting out, without having to rely on consent or any other of the legal bases. In any case, we will be happy to clarify the specific legal basis that applies to the processing, and in particular whether the provision of Personal Information is a statutory or contractual requirement, or a requirement necessary to enter into a contract.
