This thesis has an overarching goal of improving antidepressant treatment, focusing on TMS for depression. Stratified psychiatry, using biomarkers, shows potential as a method of tailoring treatment indications to the individual and implementation in clinical practice appears feasible. The heart-brain connection provides valuable information to this end, and it can also be used to optimize treatment parameters and gain insight into underlying mechanisms in depression and antidepressant treatments. Using biomarkers in stratified psychiatry, we are bridging research and real-world applications for immediate patient benefit.
